ABQ commissions are considered significant contributions to contemporary chamber music performance and training as part of its regular touring. Through its acclaimed performances, diverse programming, commissioning, extensive discography and educational mission, the American Brass Quintet has created a legacy unparalleled in the brass field. Committed to the promotion of brass chamber music through education, the American Brass Quintet has been in residence at The Julliard School since 1987 and the Aspen Music Festival since 1970.

Communitas Lecture Series: Tara Talepasand

Taravat Talepasand is an artist, activist, and educator whose labor-intensive interdisciplinary painting practice questions normative cultural behaviors within contemporary power imbalances. As an Iranian-American woman, Talepasand explores the cultural taboos that reflect on gender and political authority. Her approach to figuration reflects the cross-pollination, or lack thereof, in our Western Society.

Gabe Kovach: Guest Artist Horn Recital

Gabriel Kovach, born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, is active as both a chamber and orchestral musician. Mr. Kovach has been Principal Horn of the Phoenix Symphony since 2006. Previously, he has held positions as both the Principal Horn of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and the Opera Company of Philadelphia.

Symphonic Band

Concerts are part for the band large ensembles curriculum. As capstone events, they typically occur twice per semester. Students are required to participate in these events as a large part of their grades, and these concerts are the culmination of several weeks of classroom rehearsals. All concerts are associated with one or more of the following band ensembles MUSC 4700 Wind Orchestra, MUSC 795 Wind Symphony, MUSC 3790 Symphonic band, MUSC 3785 Marching Band.

Alexander Malofeev: Wassermann Piano Series

Since winning his first major international competition at age 13, pianist Alexander Malofeev has captured the world’s attention. Now 21 years old, Malofeev regularly performs with top orchestras around the world, garnering critical praise for his technical prowess and emotional maturity. A first-time Wassermann Series artist, Malofeev’s program includes Beethoven’s enchanting “Moonlight” Sonata, Polish composer Mieczslaw Weinberg’s B Minor Sonata, and Rachmaninoff’s sweeping Piano Sonata No. 2.

An eagerly awaited tradition around the Music Department is our series of monthly jam sessions, in which a guest artist (or two or three) from outside Cache Valley visits to perform jazz standards with USU students and community members in a relaxed environment. Come and sit in on a tune, or just sit back, relax, and enjoy the music. Jam sessions are completely unscripted, so you never know what exactly will happen, but it’s great fun watching musicians perform without a net!

Chamber Music Society of Logan: Thalea Quartet

Thalea String Quartet brings their signature vibrancy and emotional commitment to dynamic performances that reflect the past, present, and the future of the string quartet repertoire. The Quartet has been celebrated for its innovative approach to education and community engagement. Thalea String Quartet is the Doctoral Fellowship String Quartet at the University of Maryland. They won the 2021 Ann Divine Educator Award from the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and were top prize winners at the 2018 Fischoff Competition and 2018 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition.

Artist Statement: I work in assemblage, collage, drawing and works on paper which revolves around themes of everyday life issues we encounter with the human figure present. My concepts vary from emotional expressions, responses or outcome ( anger, chance, fear, happiness, hate, hurt, jealousy, love, regret, risk, vulnerability etc...), identity, perception, coping within the human condition etc... I have eclectic taste. My style is a combination of several elements with heavy emphasis on illustration, mixed media and vibrant colors with the human figure in an action-type, comic book, expressive pose and/or movie poster-like look & feel. It’s like a pizza with everything on it. Once you take that first bite, you’re inundated with flavor. And that’s what I strive for in my work. Because life hits you all at once. I occasionally insert my past experiences in my art. I believe that some of my experiences, in some cases, parallels to others for a sense of relatability. My premise is to lure the viewer in. Once they’re in, they will be placed in a position to reflect on and question their ethics, be it disquieting or placid.

Self-taught, Daniel spent two decades navigating the margins as a freelance graphic designer, operating primarily within the underground music and art scene, which he has interacted with and participated in since the late1980s. Having transitioned away from client-based projects as of 2017, Daniel now focuses on further refining a purely nonrepresentational visual language that he applies to both his art and design projects.

Fry Street Quartet with USU Strings and Alumni

The closing program in the season celebrating the Fry Street Quartet’s 20th anniversary at USU features collaborations with both current and former students of the USU string program. A highlight of this program is a commission for chamber orchestra by celebrated young composer and USU string program graduate Stephen Mitton. Stephen has written socially and environmentally conscious music for a wide variety of genres ranging from contemporary dance to full orchestra, and his works have received numerous awards. The play takes place entirely on a single Saturday afternoon in the conservatory of a large country house in Hindhead, Surrey in Edwardian era England.
It is a continuation on some of Shaw's ideas on marriage, Socialism, physical fitness, and women intent on escaping Victorian standards of helplessness, passivity, stuffy propriety, and non-involvement in politics or general affairs.
Misalliance is an ironic examination of the mating instincts of a varied group of people gathered at a wealthy man's country home on a summer weekend. Most of the romantic interest centers on the host's daughter, Hypatia Tarleton, a typical Shaw heroine who exemplifies his lifelong theory that in courtship, women are the relentless pursuers and men the apprehensively pursued.

Students are required to participate in these events as large part of their grades, and these concerts are the culmination of several weeks of classroom rehearsals.
