Communitas Lecture Series: Sara Winston

Sara J. Winston is an artist based in the Hudson Valley region of New York, USA. She works with photographs, text, and the book form to describe and respond to chronic illness and its ongoing impact on her body, mind, family, and memory. Sara is the Photography Program Coordinator at Bard College; on the faculty of the Penumbra Foundation Long Term Photobook Program; and a contributor to Lenscratch. She has projects forthcoming with Molto Molto (Brighton, UK) and Push Pull Editions (Corvallis, OR).

One of Handel's masterpiece oratorios, Theodora follows a love story between the Christian Theodora and the newly-converted Roman Didymus in the 4th century Roman border town of Antioch, a center of early Christian/Roman tensions. Sung in English, performed with the Caine String Quartet. Content includes Reference to rape and death.

Fry Street Quartet in Recital with Brant Bayless

Continuing the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Fry Street Quartet’s residency at USU, the FSQ presents a program of works by Benjamin Britten, Jessie Montgomery, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Montgomery’s Source Code, written in 2013, is a one-movement work that centers on a melody derived from the syntax of black spirituals. Benjamin Britten’s first string quartet was written during the composer’s time in America, and is considered one of the most important works of that period. The program concludes with Mozart’s towering Viola Quintet in G minor, featuring Utah Symphony Principal Viola Brant Bayless, a longtime collaborator with the FSQ.

Jazz Jams

An eagerly awaited tradition around the Music Department is our series of monthly jam sessions, in which a guest artist (or two or three) from outside Cache Valley visits to perform jazz standards with USU students and community members in a relaxed environment. Come and sit in on a tune, or just sit back, relax, and enjoy the music. Jam sessions are completely unscripted, so you never know what exactly will happen, but it’s great fun watching musicians perform without a net!
Music Therapy Senior Gala

Help us celebrate the hard-earned skills and many talents of our music therapy seniors at this unique final jury event. Seniors will be showcasing their musicality, knowledge, and capacity on a variety of instruments while being featured on a program of clinical songs they have memorized in collaborations with their peers. The unique and exciting twist of this jury is that the program will not be known to the performers until the event begins! The individual and ensemble selections will all be announced to guests and performers alike at 7pm on Saturday, 1/28/22. The event is free and open to all friends, family, colleagues, classmates, and community members who wish to cheer on our seniors at this very special event. We hope to see you there!

Multifarious Trio Concert

Multifarious is an international trio featuring Scottish saxophonist Sue McKenzie, Kansas cellist Susan Mayo, and Colorado banjoist Paul Elwood. Their music has been described as "Bela Fleck meets the Art Ensemble of Chicago." From jazz and avant-garde via deconstructed bluegrass, the trio weaves inventive improvisations amongst diverse sounds. They have been featured on BBC Radio 3 "Freeness" and their debut album, Incidents, was released in February 2021. Notable performances include Le Jam and Le Corbusier (Marseille, France), the Katowice JazzArt Festival (Poland), Broadcast (Glasgow, Scotland), WUTC Radio, Barking Legs, and Cadek Hall (Chattanooga), the Kontesa Jazz Club (Zagreb, Croatia) and the Riney Fine Arts Center (Wichita).

“Dark Winds Rising” – Logan Canyon Winds

Logan Canyon Winds present a program of contrasting moods; at the center of the recital is Philip Bimstein’s Dark Winds Rising, a musical reflection on the plan to build a toxic waste incinerator on Native American lands, featuring recorded voices of impacted individuals. Other selections on the program include Debussy’s classic “Girl with the Flaxen Hair,” Deslandres’ beautiful Quintet, and a new arrangement of Bartok’s Transylvanian Dances by Logan Canyon Winds’ own Lauren Hunt. The program also features the hopeful and energetic Quintet No. 1 by Giuseppe Cambini.

Taravat Talepasand is an artist, activist, and educator whose labor-intensive interdisciplinary painting practice questions normative cultural behaviors within contemporary power imbalances. As an Iranian-American woman, Talepasand explores the cultural taboos that reflect on gender and political authority. Her approach to figuration reflects the cross-pollination, or lack thereof, in our Western Society.

Gabriel Kovach, born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, is active as both a chamber and orchestral musician. Mr. Kovach has been Principal Horn of the Phoenix Symphony since 2006. Previously, he has held positions as both the Principal Horn of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and the Opera Company of Philadelphia.

Symphonic Band

Concerts are part for the band large ensembles curriculum. As capstone events, they typically occur twice per semester. Students are required to participate in these events as a large part of their grades, and these concerts are the culmination of several weeks of classroom rehearsals. All concerts are associated with one or more of the following band ensembles MUSC 4700 Wind Orchestra, MUSC 795 Wind Symphony, MUSC 3790 Symphonic band, MUSC 3785 Marching Band.

Alexander Malofeev: Wassermann Piano Series

Since winning his first major international competition at age 13, pianist Alexander Malofeev has captured the world’s attention. Now 21 years old, Malofeev regularly performs with top orchestras around the world, garnering critical praise for his technical prowess and emotional maturity. A first-time Wassermann Series artist, Malofeev’s program includes Beethoven’s enchanting “Moonlight” Sonata, Polish composer Mieczslaw Weinberg’s B Minor Sonata, and Rachmaninoff’s sweeping Piano Sonata No. 2.

This year's festival will feature the Reunion Trio with Bruce Forman (guitar), John Clayton (bass) and Jeff Hamilton (drums) along with Denmark-based vocalist and bassist Kristin Korb.
When guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Shelly Manne came together in 1956, they called their trio the Poll Winners—fitting, as each musician routinely topped DownBeat’s polls for their respective instrument. The five Poll Winners albums on the legendary jazz label Contemporary Records are classics that set the standard for every guitar trio that followed. Forman, Clayton and Hamilton will revisit the original trio’s musical legacy and create a beautiful homage to these extraordinary artists who inspired jazz audiences around the world.
Known for her hard swinging bass lines and sparkling vocals, Kristin Korb has established herself on the jazz stage as an exceptional artist, commanding both instruments with panache, engaging them simultaneously with an ease comparable to breathing. She will be performing with USU guitar professor Corey Christiansen, who was recently listed as one of the top 200 living jazz guitarists on allaboutjazz.com.

Thalea String Quartet brings their signature vibrancy and emotional commitment to dynamic performances that reflect the past, present, and the future of the string quartet repertoire. The Quartet has been celebrated for its innovative approach to education and community engagement. Thalea String Quartet is the Doctoral Fellowship String Quartet at the University of Maryland. They won the 2021 Ann Divine Educator Award from the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and were top prize winners at the 2018 Fischoff Competition and 2018 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition.

Artist Statement: I work in assemblage, collage, drawing and works on paper which revolves around themes of everyday life issues we encounter with the human figure present. My concepts vary from emotional expressions, responses or outcome ( anger, chance, fear, happiness, hate, hurt, jealousy, love, regret, risk, vulnerability etc...), identity, perception, coping within the human condition etc... I have eclectic taste. My style is a combination of several elements with heavy emphasis on illustration, mixed media and vibrant colors with the human figure in an action-type, comic book, expressive pose and/or movie poster-like look & feel. It’s like a pizza with everything on it. Once you take that first bite, you’re inundated with flavor. And that’s what I strive for in my work. Because life hits you all at once. I occasionally insert my past experiences in my art. I believe that some of my experiences, in some cases, parallels to others for a sense of relatability. My premise is to lure the viewer in. Once they’re in, they will be placed in a position to reflect on and question their ethics, be it disquieting or placid.

Jazz Jams

An eagerly awaited tradition around the Music Department is our series of monthly jam sessions, in which a guest artist (or two or three) from outside Cache Valley visits to perform jazz standards with USU students and community members in a relaxed environment. Come and sit in on a tune, or just sit back, relax, and enjoy the music. Jam sessions are completely unscripted, so you never know what exactly will happen, but it’s great fun watching musicians perform without a net!
This month’s jazz jam session will begin with a set by the three-bass ensemble UTB3, a trio featuring the finest jazz bassists in the mountain west region, David Baker, Denson Angulo and our very own Utah State University bass professor, Dr. Braun Khan. The UTB3 set will be followed by an open jazz jam session.

Tea Time with the Devil began with the hypothesis that I could create a diverse palette of glazes from one local material. I chose to base my experiments on a granite from Devil’s Playground in western Utah. I collected its bones, hauled them back to USU and crushed them into powder. Each glaze contains at least 50% of the Devil’s granite.This palette resulted from much trial and error — mostly error. Between 2020 and 2023, I ran thousands of glaze tests to formulate and hone these surfaces.
Why this place and material?
The wild landscape of Devil’s Playground captured my imagination and made me want to keep returning. I am truly grateful to this landscape and its rocks. The granite contains a high percentage of silica, as well as some feldspar and mica. Once powdered, it melts into a celadon glaze without adulteration. This was a good starting point: a blank (albeit grey) canvas for experiments.
Why tea wares?
As an Englishman and a walking stereotype, I love tea. Tea brings people together. By sharing tea, we make time to stop, reflect and connect. I am fascinated by the world’s diverse tea traditions and their accompanying ceramic tools. Tea Time with the Devil is inspired by the distinct tea traditions of England, Japan, China, and the American South.

Dan Hicks FSA, MCIfA (born 1972) is Professor of Contemporary Archaeology at the University of Oxford, Curator at the Pitt Rivers Museum, and a Fellow of St Cross College, Oxford. Dan works on the material and visual culture of the human past, up to and including the modern, colonial, contemporary and digital world, and on the history of Archaeology, Anthropology Art, and Architecture. His curatorial work has ranged widely, and most recently included the co-curated exhibition and book Lande: the Calais “Jungle” and Beyond in 2019.

Fry Street Quartet with USU Strings and Alumni

The closing program in the season celebrating the Fry Street Quartet’s 20th anniversary at USU features collaborations with both current and former students of the USU string program. A highlight of this program is a commission for chamber orchestra by celebrated young composer and USU string program graduate Stephen Mitton. Stephen has written socially and environmentally conscious music for a wide variety of genres ranging from contemporary dance to full orchestra, and his works have received numerous awards.

Apotheosis
Zekiel Dirk Betzer is an oil painter.. His paintings are a visual representation of transfiguration – the elevation of daily life into myth. He draws inspiration from cultural beliefs, objects of personal significance, memories, and dreams to construct scenes which evoke the divine. He believes that, if we defer to monolithic ideologies to narrativize our life, we are prescribed a relationship with the transcendent, rather than discovering it; leading us down the path of ideological possession. He is principally interested in how we, as both artist and audience, invent meaning, and how this invention informs the way we engage with reality; especially how objects or memories become sacred. The purpose of his work is, firstly, to elevate, transform, or recontextualize mundane items; secondly, to arrange these items on canvas in a visually coherent, narrativized way; and lastly, to inspire the same method of transfiguration in the mind of the audience.

By visualizing liminal spaces, migratory patterns, and quotidian subject matter the work serves as a metaphor for the Latinx experience in the United States–an experience defined by conflicts between conformity and resistance, individuality and community, spirituality and secularism, alienation and belonging. “Black and white are the colors of photography...they symbolize the alternatives of hope and despair,” Robert Frank once said, and it is through a nonlinear installation of black and white imagery that I seek to describe the push and pull of both cultures, and how accepting one over the other may lead to a loss of identity, or, a reality of many ways of being.

Meg Griffiths: Visiting Artist Lecture

Meg Griffiths is an artist, professor, independent curator, and co-founder of A Yellow Rose Project, a photographic collaboration of responses, reflections, and reactions to the 19th Amendment from over one hundred women across the United States. She is based in Denton, Texas, where she is Assistant Professor of Photography at Texas Woman’s University. Griffiths’ work has travelled nationally and internationally, and is placed in collections such as Center for Creative Photography, Capitol One Collection, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and Center for Fine Art Photography. Her book projects have been acquired by various institutions around the country including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Yale University Library, Duke University Libraries, Museum of Modern Art, The Getty Research Institute, and is included in the USU Photobook Special Collection.

The play takes place entirely on a single Saturday afternoon in the conservatory of a large country house in Hindhead, Surrey in Edwardian era England.
It is a continuation on some of Shaw's ideas on marriage, Socialism, physical fitness, and women intent on escaping Victorian standards of helplessness, passivity, stuffy propriety, and non-involvement in politics or general affairs.
Misalliance is an ironic examination of the mating instincts of a varied group of people gathered at a wealthy man's country home on a summer weekend. Most of the romantic interest centers on the host's daughter, Hypatia Tarleton, a typical Shaw heroine who exemplifies his lifelong theory that in courtship, women are the relentless pursuers and men the apprehensively pursued.

Personal Details borrows techniques and materials from Printmaking and Drawing, combined in the interest of creating subtly detailed layers and textures which reflect the artist’s thoughts on childhood, adulthood, and parenthood. Ben’s artistic goal is to produce images that are rich with personal detail, and aesthetically representative of the mental tapestries that he creates for himself when memory and reflection overlap. Each composition has been carefully crafted to portray Ben’s lived experiences through the representation of significant places, spaces, and objects. The works in the exhibition are the fruits of deep introspective thought fueled by memory, experience, and emotion.

Join the band for some cool jazz in the Daines Concert Hall on a hot summer evening! The band is also delighted to feature President Noelle E. Cockett, who will conduct the Scotsman as a finale to the program.

The Tiny Houses assignment is a component of the Architectural Graphics and CADD courses, and the project outline is simple: design a small residence for two people, approximately 500 sqft per level. The residence must have more than one level, be built in Utah, and meet all residential building codes. The students create presentation drawings, a three-dimensional model, set of construction documents, and interior and exterior renderings of their custom design.

Chamber Music Society of Logan: Ying Quartet

CMSL was established in 1981 by a group of local chamber music enthusiasts. They strive to "provide a link between the young people of the community and the professional music world."
This concert will feature the Grammy Award-winning Ying Quartet. Robin Scott and Janet Ying on violin, Phillip Ying on viola, and David Ying on cello.

Sasha Su-Ling Welland is Chair & Professor of Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies, Adjunct Professor of Anthropology, and China Studies faculty member at the University of Washington. Her current research on embodied ecologies, rooted in her hometown of St. Louis, examines the entanglement of military and medicine, nuclear colonialism and racial capitalism in the Anthropocene production of everyday carcinogenic relations.

"An Evening of French Flute Sonatas featuring Dr. Jeiran Hasan on flute, with guest artists Chilali Hugo (harp) and Dr. Jessica Roderer Gibbons of BYU - Idaho (piano). Repertoire includes compositions by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges for flute and harp, the first classical composer of African descent; Louise-Marie Simon, a prolific female composer writing under the pen name of Claude Arrieu; Darius Milhaud, one of the most recognized composers of the Les Six; and the infamous Cesar Franck, in a transcription of his tremendous Violin Sonata.
